EXTENDED (376 words)

A respected business leader and entrepreneur, Rob McCord took office as the 45th Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on January 20, 2009.  Today, as chief executive of the Pennsylvania Treasury Department – which has a staff of more than 400 employees – Treasurer McCord helps invest more than $80 billion per year, and oversees a broad variety of operations designed to increase efficiency and improve the economic security of Pennsylvanians.

Treasurer McCord works innovatively to provide strong financial returns for all Pennsylvanians.  He leads a variety of programs that serve senior citizens, students, entrepreneurs, and financially vulnerable citizens.

Treasurer McCord recognizes the need to help Pennsylvania invest in long-term goals, and has brought remarkable financial acumen to his work as an elected official.  Already, he has helped generate billions of dollars in improved returns for Pennsylvania’s pension funds and the Treasury-run 529 college savings program.

Throughout his career, Treasurer McCord has fought for beneficial public policies and productive investments.  Prior to his election as Treasurer, he founded the Eastern Technology Fund and served from 1998 to 2007 as co-founder and Managing Director of Pennsylvania Early Stage Partners – a family of venture funds that provided "double-bottom line" investing in job-creating, early-stage, life-science and technology firms.  From 1994 through 1998, Treasurer McCord worked as a senior executive at Safeguard Scientifics, one of the first venture incubators of its kind, where he helped Safeguard earn an annual return on capital of more than 50 percent per year.  Treasurer McCord's work as a venture capitalist helped generate more than 2,000 jobs.

In addition to his work as a venture capitalist, from 1996 through 2007, Treasurer McCord led the Eastern Technology Council, a successful trade association that served hundreds of fast-growing and innovative companies.  Before joining the private sector, Treasurer McCord spent a decade working on Capitol Hill, where he specialized in budget and technology issues.  Treasurer McCord also served as the CEO of the bipartisan Congressional Institute for the Future, a think tank co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore and the late U.S. Senator John Heinz.

Treasurer McCord earned his undergraduate degree in Economics and History at Harvard University, and he earned his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania.  He lives in Montgomery County with his wife and two sons.
